AHRA Advocacy: Breaking the Chains – Eliminating Violence Against Women and Addressing Substance Use Vulnerabilities

December 01, 2023

Thank you for joining us in the Orange Campaign against violence towards women. Let’s continue shedding light on the critical vulnerabilities faced by women, adolescents, and children in substance use.

Gender Disparity: Globally, women represent a significant portion of substance users, with a notable increase in female substance use over the past decade. Stigma and limited access to treatment exacerbate the impact on women’s health and well-being.

Adolescents and Children: The prevalence of substance use among adolescents and children is rising, posing a critical public health concern. Early initiation significantly increases the risk of dependency and long-term health consequences.

Health Impact: Substance use among women and young individuals is associated with severe health consequences, including reproductive health issues, maternal complications, and developmental challenges in children born to substance-using mothers.

Social Implications: Substance use contributes to a cycle of poverty and social marginalization, particularly affecting women and children. It hinders educational attainment, employment opportunities, and overall social integration.

Intersectionality with Mental Health: Substance use often intersects with mental health challenges, compounding the complexity of addressing these issues. Women and young individuals facing substance use are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health disorders, emphasizing the need for integrated interventions.

Human Rights and Vulnerability: Individuals using drugs, particularly women and young people, are vulnerable to human rights abuses, including discrimination, violence, and unequal access to healthcare.

🔶 Join Us in Advocating for Change: This Orange Campaign, let’s stand united to eliminate violence against women and address substance use vulnerabilities. Share the facts, amplify our message, and be part of the solution.

On this World AIDS Day, let’s also extend our solidarity to those affected by HIV/AIDS. Recognizing the intersectionality of health issues, we emphasize the importance of comprehensive support and understanding for individuals facing both substances use vulnerabilities and HIV/AIDS. Together, we can break the chains!
