In reference to the central nervous system, any agent that activates, enhances, or increases neural activity; also called psychostimulant. Included are the amfetamines, cocaine, caffeine and other xanthines, nicotine, and synthetic appetite suppressants such as phenmetrazine or methylphenidate.
