AHRA’s Position at the 67th UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs
In March 2024, the Southeast Asia Harm Reduction Association (AHRA) made a powerful statement at the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (UNCND). Our position emphasized the necessity of prioritizing human rights, health, and evidence-based approaches in all drug policies. This statement was a collaborative effort among harm reduction organizations across Southeast Asia, reflecting a unified stance against the ineffective punitive drug policies that have plagued the region for decades.
The session marked a significant milestone as the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs embraced harm reduction for the first time, acknowledging its critical role in public health responses to non-medical drug use. Despite challenges, including limited financing and persistent stigma, this event showcased the growing global recognition of harm reduction as a vital component of drug policy reform. AHRA continues to advocate for evidence-based policies that uphold human rights and public health, striving for a more compassionate and effective approach to drug issues.
