World TB Day 2024: Addressing TB and Substance Use in Southeast Asia

March 24, 2024

As World TB Day 2024 approaches, it’s essential to acknowledge the intersecting challenges of tuberculosis (TB) and substance use across Southeast Asia. Extensive research has highlighted the heightened TB risk among people who use drugs (PWUD), particularly those who inject drugs (PWID). Factors such as compromised immune systems and living conditions contribute to this elevated risk, with studies indicating TB incidence rates among individuals who use drugs being significantly higher than those in the general population.

These insights underscore the urgent need for integrated healthcare services and targeted interventions to address TB within the PWUD demographic. However, systemic challenges persist, including the criminalization of drug use and associated stigma, which hinder access to healthcare services and exacerbate TB risks.

As we approach World TB Day, collaborative efforts are essential to overcome these obstacles. Implementing evidence-based interventions and policy reforms are crucial steps in mitigating the public health challenge posed by TB and substance use. By addressing the structural and policy barriers and promoting harm reduction strategies, we can work towards reducing TB incidence and improving health outcomes in this vulnerable population.
